REAL means checking whether something is genuine before you believe it or share it. Look at who said it, when, and whether it can be verified elsewhere. If you cannot confirm it, do not pass it on.
What it means
REAL is about telling truth from falsehood online: fake news, doctored images, impersonation, and stories crafted to fool you. It is the core of information literacy.
Why it matters
False information spreads faster than the truth, and it does real damage: it can spark panic, ruin reputations, and trick people out of money. Every person who shares without checking becomes part of the problem. Every person who practises REAL slows the lie down.
How to practise REAL
- Check the source. Who is really saying this?
- Check the date. Old stories are often recycled to mislead.
- Look for the same news from a trusted outlet.
- If you cannot confirm it, do not share it.
