If you have lost access to WhatsApp, act fast: reinstall the app and sign in with your number to request a new verification code by SMS, which logs the intruder out. Turn on two-step verification immediately, and warn your contacts not to send money to anyone messaging from your account. Never share a verification code with anyone.
How the takeover happens
A scammer tricks you into sharing the 6-digit code texted to your phone. With it, they register your number on their device, lock you out, and message your contacts asking for money.
Recover your account
- Reinstall WhatsApp and enter your phone number.
- Enter the new 6-digit code sent by SMS, which signs the intruder out.
- Turn on two-step verification in Settings, Account.
- Message your contacts: my account was compromised, do not send money.
